Sarah Powell

PhDMath Education Professor

Professor Sarah Powell is Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education at University of Texas at Austin, where her research interests include developing and testing interventions for students with mathematics difficulties. Sarah was previously an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Virginia.

Sarah’s dissertation on providing instruction to students with mathematics difficulties won awards from the Division for Learning Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children. For the past 10 years, she has been a Fellow at the Meadows Center for Preventing Education Risk.

Sarah is a prolific writer with over 80 on learning and mathematics and over 140 conference presentations. Sarah holds a PhD in Special Education and a Master of Education in Schools Administration, both from Vanderbilt University. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, from Centre College in Kentucky. In 2019, Sarah received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Sarah has been an advisor to Querium since 2015. Our work on StepWise AI is guided by her research concerning effective methods of tackling word problems.
